Romania Summer Camp 2010 - Case Study

Alina Badita

Alina Badita
We have known Alina for more than 6 years now and have watched her grow from a child into a young woman. She is always kind hearted and thoughtful.
In August 2006 Alina, aged 15, attended our Summer Camp (see photos) and we noticed that Alina only had the clothes she was wearing: literally one pair of black nylon trousers, a long sleeved nylon shirt and a pair of flip-flops. We knew that she was from a poor family but had not realised the depth of their poverty.
A kind friend gave one of our colleagues enough money to buy summer and winter clothes and shoes for Alina and to buy her underwear and shampoo.
As we spoke further, with Alina, we discovered that she lived with her father and grandmother. Her mother left them when she was just a toddler and she has never seen her again. In September 2006 we began to support Alina’s family through our Family Sponsorship Programme so that she could attend school once again and so that her father could begin work on a small holding nearby.
Attending the Summer Camp was the only holiday that Alina had ever had - she had never been away from her home town and had certainly never travelled 5 hours by bus to the mountains.

Alina was overwhelmed. It cost £60 to send Alina on the holiday of a lifetime!
In June 2007, Alina’s father died in a tragic accident leaving her alone. Her grandmother could not look after her and her uncle asked the church pastor to bring her up. Alina will definitely be coming to the Summer Camp this year, as she really needs her friends around her as she learns to cope day by day with the loss of her father.
We have 100 young people just like Alina who hope to come to our Summer Camp this August and just as last year it will cost £60 per young person (to cover food, accommodation and transport).
We really need your help to enable these needy youngsters the opportunity of a holiday in clean, fresh air and to spend time learning more about God and to gain greater independence. We need to raise a further £3500 to enable Alina and her friends their holiday of a lifetime!
We are taking a small team to Romania in August 2010 for the annual summer camp.
